Sushmita Dev, the chief of All India Mahila Congress, has changed her Twitter bio, which now reads former Member of Indian National Congress and Mahila Congress.
Twitter bio to “former Member of Indian National Congress and Mahila Congress” was the first clue that she had quit Congress.
Sushmita Dev, who headed the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress, is likely to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday amid speculation that she might join TMC.
In March this year, the Congress had dismissed reports of Sushmita Dev resigning from the party over seat-sharing in the Assam Assembly elections.
Confirming the development, senior Congress leader Kail Sibal tweeted, “Sushmita Dev resigns from the primary membership of our party. While young leaders leave, we ‘oldies’ are blamed for our efforts to strengthen it. The party moves on with: Eyes Wide Shut.”
Assam Congress president Bhupen Bora said he was not aware of Sushmita Dev’s resignation.
Sushmita Dev is the daughter of Assam Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev. Sushmita Dev had earlier been elected MP from the Silchar seat, which had been the stronghold of her father.
