Several people, including women and children, were injured when a stampede-like situation occurred at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday.
According to sources, the situation went out of control as several people thronged to the temple along with the VIPs, including Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former chief minister Uma Bharti, which affected the crowd management.
In a video of the incident, several people could be seen pushing and jostling at gate number 4 of the temple that eventually led to the stampede-like situation. Even police personnel, who tried to rescue the situation, were overpowered by the crowds.
Speaking on the incident, Ujjain District Collector Ashish Singh said the situation would be normal next Monday. “This Monday was an exception but we will plan for next Monday and ensure social distancing,” he said.
Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It opened last month for devotees who had received at least one shot of Covid-19 vaccine or carried a negative RTPCR report.
The administration has put a cap of 3,500 visitors to the temple between 6 am and 8 pm with entry restricted to 500 people in two hours.
