Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will go ahead with his Lakhimpur Kheri visit and said three party leaders will go to the district where restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed.
Addressing the media ahead of the Congress leaders’ journey to Lakhimpur Kheri, Rahul Gandhi said, “Three of us will be going and Section 144 prevents a gathering of four or more people. We plan to go there.”
Earlier, the UP government denied permission to Rahul Gandhi and his delegation of Congress leaders to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.
Asked about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being detained in Sitapur on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, Rahul Gandhi said, “Yes, she has been detained, but this press conference is about the farmers.”
“For some time now, the farmers are being attacked by the government. They are being run over and murdered. BJP’s minister is being spoken about and no action is being taken,” said Rahul Gandhi while attacking the Centre over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
He added, “A systematic attack is taking place on the country’s farmers. Initially, it was the land acquisition bill then it’s the three farm laws.”
Speaking about his visit, Rahul Gandhi said that he aims to give confidence and hope to the distraught farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri. “They are being run over by a criminal who calls himself the son of a Union minister. This cannot be allowed to go on,” said Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi further went on to attack PM Narendra Modi and said, “Yesterday, the PM was in Lucknow, but he couldn’t go to Lakhimpur to meet the farmers.”
“Even the post-mortem was not done correctly,” said Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi went on to declare that he will go ahead with his Lakhimpur Kheri visit along with two other Congress chief ministers. “Today, we’ll try to go to Lakhimpur with two CMs. We want to go there and support the people, why is it that only we are being stopped,” asked Rahul Gandhi.
He added, “The Chhattisgarh CM was also stopped from going to Lakhimpur Kheri even when he was alone. How is Section 144 applicable when an individual is going on his own.”
On Sunday, Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra allegedly run over a group of farmers with his vehicle, killing four. The incident led to violent clashes in the area, leading to four more deaths.
Hours later, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra headed towards Lakhimpur Kheri along with a host of other Congress leaders but were detained in Sitapur.
