Eight people, including four farmers, were killed on Sunday as violence erupted during a farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri. Farmers’ outfits have claimed that a car ferrying Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Misra’s son Ashish ran over a group of protesters.
The farmers were protesting against Uttar Pradesh deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to a village in Lakhimpur Kheri. Ajay Misra and his son Ashish, however, claimed that protesters attacked the convoy and killed a driver and three others, including two BJP workers. An FIR has been registered against Ashish Misra in connection with the violence.
On Monday, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav staged a sit-in protest outside his residence in Lucknow and demanded the resignation of MoS (Home) Ajay Misra and deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.
“The government does not want any political leaders to go there. What is the government hiding? Even Britishers would not have committed the kind of atrocities this govt is committing against farmers. Rs 2 crore and government jobs should be given to next of kin of the farmers who died,” Akhilesh Yadav said.
Earlier in the day, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who went to meet the affected families in Tikunia, was detained by the Uttar Pradesh police in Hargaon police station area.
