Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to lay the foundation stone for Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, on November 25.
Construction work for the airport has begun, and its operations will begin by 2024. Once it becomes operational, Uttar Pradesh will have five international airports, the highest for any state in India.
With the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly election scheduled for early next year, the ruling BJP is on an inauguration spree. With the Jewar airport, the government is expecting to give a fillip to the region’s economy.
JEWAR AIRPORT TO BRING INVESTMENT OF RS 35,000 CRORE TO UP: OFFICIALS
The Central and state governments have been highlighting the expected economic benefits of Noida International Airport.
According to officials, the airport is expected to yield investments worth Rs 10,000 crore for adjoining areas in the initial years.
Located strategically, about 72 km from Delhi’s IGI Airport and 40 km from the multi-nodal logistics hub at Dadri, the airport is expected to boost the state’s economy.

The airport’s strategic location will give job opportunities to the young from adjoining areas – Aligarh, Hapur, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Bulandshahr.
The airport will be spread over 1,334 hectares of land and will have a capacity to serve around 1.2 crore passengers.
Job opportunities will come not just from work at the airport but also from allied industries like storage, defence and food.
BETWEEN 2040-50, JEWAR AIRPORT TO HANDLE 70 MILLION PASSENGERS PER YEAR
The government is expecting traffic from Delhi’s airport to be diverted to Jewar airport in coming years. Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said, “The traffic of 12 million passengers per year is expected in the first phase and by the completion of the final phase i.e. between 2040 and 50, the capacity of Jewar airport will be to handle 70 million passengers per year.”
He added, “The UP government is spending Rs 4,326 crore on acquisition of land, rehabilitation and resettlement.”
AIRPORT TO BOOST RS 10,000-CRORE DEFENCE CORRIDOR
An ambitious project, the defence corridor in Uttar Pradesh, was launched by PM Modi in 2018 and Aligarh is one of the six nodes of the corridor — Agra, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, Jhansi and Lucknow being the other five.
In Aligarh alone, 20 companies have submitted proposals for setting up units and 19 have been allotted 55.40 hectares of land.
The companies have been able to cumulatively garner investments worth Rs 1,500 crore and 20,000 people will be employed with them in months to come.
Jewar airport, which is 50km from the defence corridor, will help boost the industry besides providing employment to the area’s youth.
