Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya has said that the accused in the death of seer Narendra Giri has been arrested hours after the Mahant was found dead.
An FIR had been registered in the case against Mahant Narendra Giri’s disciple Anand Giri and later he was detained from Haridwar on Monday night.
The police will be meanwhile recording the statements of witnesses present at the mutt at the time of the death. Police have also recovered a video statement of deceased Narendra Giri, which will be probed as part of the investigation.
Earlier, UP Law Minister Brajesh Pathak had told Aaj Tak that the culprits won’t be spared. Mahant Narendra Giri, the president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, which is the organisation of seers, was found dead on Monday at Baghambari Muth.
According to Inspector General of Police K P Singh, Mahant Narendra Giri’s body was found hanging from the ceiling by his disciples.
The police initially said that they had received a call at 5.30 pm on Monday from the Muth saying Narendra Giri had hanged himself and that his body was found at the guest house where he lived during the day.
