Srinagar: The security forces neutralised one terrorist in Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir in an operation that began on Thursday evening. The operation concluded on Friday morning and the Jammu and Kashmir Police said that a major tragedy was averted ahead of Independence Day.
“The operation is over now. A major tragedy has been averted before Independence Day. National Highway will open for traffic shortly,” IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar told news agency ANI.
“The search was difficult at night. So, we searched today morning. The body of a Pakistani terrorist, called Usman, was found. He was active for the past 6 months. AK 47, magazines, grenade, rocket launcher grenade found. This shows that a major incident was going to take place,” Kumar further said.
The police said that two terrorists opened fire from a building when a BSF convoy was approaching. “Security forces surrounded them, encounter ensued. We used rocket launchers, militant was neutralised at night,”
As reported earlier, the terrorists fired upon the convoy of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Kulgam when they were travelling from Srinagar to Jammu. Two security personnel and two civilians were injured in the firing by terrorists, Kumar had earlier said.
An exchange of fire continued even on Friday morning. Earlier, Kumar had said that reinforcements had reached the spot where the encounter was underway.
