Bengaluru: Hours after massive public outrage was sparked by his highly offensive “enjoy rape” remark, senior Karnataka Congress leader and former Karnataka Assembly speaker KR Ramesh Kumar apologised. He made the sexist comment in the Karnataka Assembly on Thursday.
While speaking in the Assembly, Kumar said, “There is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the position in which you are.”
But when his statement was called out, Kumar took to Twitter last night and posted: “I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone for the indifferent and negligent comment I made in today’s assembly about “Rape!” My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off the cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!”
Today, while speaking in the Karnataka Assembly, Kumar said: “If it hurts the sentiments of women, I’ve no problem apologising. I apologise from the bottom of my heart.”
To this, Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, who had shockingly laughed off yesterday’s comment made by Kumar, said: “He has apologised, let’s not drag it further.”
KR Ramesh Kumar made the unsavoury comment when MLAs started requesting time from Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri to discuss farmers’ issues in the Assembly on Thursday. The Speaker then found himself in a bind because he wanted to wrap up the discussion as early as possible, but the MLAs were insisting on extending the time.
“You know I am now in ‘let’s enjoy the situation’ mode. I am finding it very difficult to control the House. I will have to throw all rules, guidelines into the air and allow everyone to talk on the topic of their choice at the session. I will have to say yes to everything,” said Kageri.
Upon hearing this, Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar made the offensive remark, to which other members, including the Speaker, laughed.
“There is a saying. When rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it,” said Kumar, adding: “That’s exactly the position into which you are”.
The rest of the members of the House laughed instead of condemning the remarks.
This is not the first time that KR Ramesh Kumar has made such a disgusting remark. As Assembly Speaker in Karnataka, he had previously compared himself to a rape survivor. A number of lawmakers protested the statement he made during the session, including women members of his party.
