J&K, for the first time, District Development Council (DDC) chairpersons in Jammu and Kashmir presided over the Independence Day functions as chief guests and rake salutes at march past in their respective districts.
Block Development Council chairpersons presided over the functions in their respective blocks while presidents of municipal committees and councils did the honours in their respective areas.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha took part at the main Independence Day function held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium.
“Kashmir is a place of peace and brotherhood. Proud of sacrifices made by security forces,” he said.
The country is celebrating ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, marking the 75th year of Independence from British rule.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating the historic day from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi as he hoisted the national flag and delivered the customary address to the nation.
Addressing the nation, PM Modi said that the development of J&K is visible on the ground, adding that delimitation exercise is on and preparations for Assembly polls in the Union territory is also underway.
“Delimitation Commission has been constituted in Jammu and Kashmir and preparations are on for Assembly elections in the future.” PM Modi said during his Independence Day speech.
