Congress has accused the Uttar Pradesh police of manhandling Priyanka Gandhi who was on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri. However, she was detained by the police in the Hargaon area at around 5.30 am on Monday.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress alleged Priyanka Gandhi’s clothes were pulled and her arm was twisted by the police. The party said it would continue its fight.
Priyanka Gandhi, who was expected to meet affected families in Tikunia on Monday following the deadly clash between a group of protesting farmers and the convoy of Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Misra’s son Ashish Misra, was earlier stopped from leaving Lucknow and placed under a house arrest.
However, the Congress leader left her home on foot and started walking and then later left in a car. According to UP Congress’ Twitter handle, heavy police presence was deployed at toll plazas on the way from Lucknow to Lakhimpur Kheri and the police were stopping activists and the media by parking trucks on the road.
On her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke about Sunday’s incident and said, “The way the farmers are being trampled in this country, I have no words. For months, the farmers have been trying to raise their voice, but the government is not ready to listen. Today’s incident shows that this government is playing politics of trampling the farmers. And this country is farmers’ country.”
Reacting to the UP Police’s order to place her under house arrest, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “I am not committing a crime by stepping out of the house. I just want to meet the affected families and share their grief. What wrong am I committing? And if I have done something wrong, then you [UP Police] should have an order, a warrant. You [UP Police] are stopping me, my car, but for what reason?”
