As Basavaraj Bommai took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister on July 28, he became the latest in the father-son duos to occupy the CM’s post. A look at other instances when a CM’s son went on to become CM.
Ending the suspense, the Karnataka BJP legislature party earlier this week elected Basavaraj Bommai as its new leader to succeed BS Yediyurappa as the Karnataka CM. Basavaraj Bommai was Minister for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature in Yediyurappa’s council of ministers which was dissolved on Monday.
As the 61-year old took oath from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, it was the second instance of a father-son duo becoming Chief Minister of Karnataka, after H D Deve Gowda and H D Kumaraswamy.
Bommai’s father Somappa Rayappa Bommai served the office of the Karnataka CM from 1996-98.
A look at other members of the club where the son of a CM stepped into his father’s shoes and is currently occupying the top post:
1. TAMIL NADU
In Tamil Nadu, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi held the chief ministership for five terms between 1969 and 2011. His son MK Stalin is the present CM, having led the party to a huge victory in the Assembly poll this year.
2. ANDHRA PRADESH
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is occupying the state’s top post once held by his father YS Rajasekhar Reddy. YS Rajasekhara Reddy held the post for two terms, from 2004-2009. Jagan Mohan Reddy became the CM in May 2019. Andhra Pradesh also saw N T Rama Rao and his son-in-law N Chandrababu Naidu occupying the CM’s chair.
Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik’s father Biju Patnaik was also a chief minister of that state. Biju Patnaik held the state’s top job twice, from 1961-1963 and 1990-95. Naveen Patnaik has been in office since 2000, across five terms as CM.
Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren’s father, Shibu Soren, was also the state’s chief minister. Shibu Soren was the chief minister for three terms, while Hemant Soren, a second-term CM, began his current stint in December 2019.
5. ARUNACHAL PRADESH
Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu’s father, Dorji Khandu, who died in a helicopter crash in 2011, was also the chief minister.
In Meghalaya, father-son duo of PA Sangma and Conrad Sangma has held the top post.
Other instances when father-son duos have been chief ministers:
Members of three generations of the Abdullah family have been Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers: Sheikh Abdullah, his son Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah. The father-daughter duo of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti were also chief ministers.
In Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh Yadav went on to become the CM. While Mulayam Singh Yadav was in CM’s chair across three terms, Akhilesh was in office for a single term, during 2012-17.
Former Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna’s father Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Devi Lal and his son Om Prakash Chautala have also been the CM of Haryana. Similarly, Shankarrao Chavan and his son Ashok Chavan in Maharashtra.
