A day after leaving the BJP and joining the TMC, former Union minister Babul Supriyo had a war of words with BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta on Twitter.
In response to Swapan Dasgupta’s claim that Babul Supriyo’s “defection may end up damaging his own image”, Supriyo retorted that the same must then be true of the ‘rivals’ who joined the BJP and were given top posts earlier this year.
“Did I create history by shifting sides? Well, all the ‘rivals’ who joined the BJP, were embraced and made to sit on top posts – while ignoring all those ‘real’ BJP grassroots fighters – should be dumped because they may have all spoiled their images (like you said I did) and tarnished BJP’s image. Right?” Babul Supriyo wrote on Twitter.

“What about this same Babul publicly protesting against inducting ‘outsiders’ into BJP? Did BJP do good to its image then? Please ask the same supporters who were sidelined by these ‘outsiders’,” Babul Supriyo wrote, referring to the wave of defections from the TMC to BJP that had occurred before the West Bengal Assembly election this year.
On Saturday, Swapan Dasgupta had tweeted that he was sad that Babul Supriyo had left BJP and called him an ‘asset’ to the party.
I am sad @SuPriyoBabul has left BJP to ‘re-enter’ politics. I can’t speak about the future, but he was an asset to BJP & I would personally like to thank him for his services. For those of us for whom BJP is a lifelong commitment, the fight goes on—even in adverse circumstances.

REACTIONS FROM POLITICAL LEADERS
The former Union minister’s decision to join the TMC, months after claiming he was quitting ‘active politics’, has been met with varied reactions from different politicians. While TMC leaders like Mahua Moitra welcomed him, BJP leaders like Dilip Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari stated that his move to TMC was not a huge loss for them.
After joining the TMC, Babul Supriyo said at a press conference that his decision to join TMC is not “politics of revenge”, but “politics of opportunity.”
