Babul Supriyo said he wants TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to become the Prime Minister in 2024.
TMC leader and former Union minister Babul Supriyo said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was among the frontrunners for the prime ministerial post in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
“I want the captain of our party, Mamata Banerjee, to become the Prime Minister in 2024. Opposition plays an important role in a democratic system. Nobody can deny the fact that Mamata Banerjee is among the top frontrunners for the prime ministerial post,” Babul Supriyo told ANI.
The Asansol MP and former BJP leader joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday, months after he announced his decision to quit politics.
Babul Supriyo was inducted into the TMC by the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.
The former Minister of State for Environment had then said he wouldn’t join any other political party. Babul Supriyo’s announcement came after he was dropped from the Union Cabinet in July during a reshuffle.
Babul Supriyo’s remarks come days after TMC’s mouthpiece ‘Jaago Bangla’ stated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had failed to become an alternative face to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the potential alternative to Prime Minister Modi in the next Lok Sabha election.
Babul Supriyo also told ANI that there was resentment among old BJP leaders. “I have not created any history by changing the party. A horde of leaders joined BJP from other parties before the West Bengal Assembly polls. There is resentment among the old leaders. BJP should ask them about their resentments,” Babul Supriyo told ANI.
Babul Supriyo has said he would quit the BJP and resign as the Member of Parliament from Asansol.
