Months after he quit active politics, Asansol MP and former Union minister Babul Supriyo on Saturday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
“Today, in the presence of National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and RS MP Derek O’Brien, former Union minister and sitting MP Babul Supriyo joined the Trinamool family,” the TMC said in a tweet.

Babul Supriyo said he would quit the BJP and resign as the Member of Parliament from Asansol.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said many BJP leaders were in communication with the TMC leadership. “One (Babul Supriyo) joined today, another wants to join tomorrow. This process will go on. Wait and watch,” ANI quoted Ghosh as saying.
In a long Facebook post on July 31, Babul Supriyo had announced his decision to quit politics. He had clarified that he would not join any other political party and continue to be a “team player”.
Babul Supriyo’s post came after he was dropped from the Union Cabinet in July, which the Asansol MP had acknowledged as one of the reasons behind his decision.
“The question will arise why did I leave politics. Is there any link to the ministerial post that I lost? Yes, there is. To some extent there is a link,” he had said.
Babul Supriyo’s alleged feud with West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh was also cited as one of the reasons that led to his decision to quit politics.
Babul Supriyo security downgraded
According to sources, Babul Supriyo’s security, provided by the Centre, was also downgraded today from Z to Y category today.
Soon after joining the TMC, Babul Supriyo changed his Twitter cover image. His cover image reads “Don’t let someone get comfortable with disrespecting you.”
