Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced the addition of Vailankanni Church to the senior citizens’ free pilgrimage scheme, trips under which are set to commence December 3.
The Delhi government has added Vailankanni Church in Tamil Nadu to the list of sites covered under the free pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Wednesday.
“Many Christians wanted to visit Vailankanni Church for pilgrimage, the Vailankanni Church has been added to the Mukhramantri Tirtha Yatra Yojna list,” said Kejriwal.
With this, the total number of destinations covered under the scheme has become 12+2. Ayodhya was added to the list last month.
CM Kejriwal also said that registrations for the Ayodhya pilgrimage, which begins next month, are already open. “Under the free pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens of Delhi, we are sending them to Ayodhya to have a darshan of Shri Ram Lalla Our first train for Ayodhya will be leaving on December 3,” he added.
The Delhi government will bear the cost of one elderly and one dependent.
Under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Teerath Yatra Yojna’, the Delhi government bears complete expenditure on free pilgrimage of senior citizens to places like Jagannath Puri, Rameshwaram, Shirdi, Mathura, Haridwar, Tirupati among others.
Over 35,000 senior citizens have undertaken pilgrimage under the scheme.
Due to Covid-19, the scheme was halted since April 2020 but now instructions have been issued to resume it and the trains for various destinations are expected to be started in the next one month, Kejriwal had previously said.
Among the 12 destinations where the Delhi government offers free pilgrimage include Delhi-Rameswaram-Madurai, Delhi-Tirupati, Delhi-Dwarkadhish-Nageshwar, Delhi-Puri-Konark-Bhubaneswar, Delhi-Shirdi-Shani Shinglapur, Delhi-Ujjain-Onkareshwar-and Delhi-Bodh Gaya-Sarnath.
The scheme also includes destinations such as Ajmer-Pushkar tour, Delhi-Mathura-Vrindavan-Agra-Fatehpur Sikri, Delhi-Haridwar-Rishikesh-Neelkanth, Delhi-Amritsar-Wagah Border-Anandpur Sahib and Delhi-Vaishno Devi-Jammu.
