The Aligarh district panchayat has sent a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government, seeking a change in the name of the city to ‘Harigarh’. Another proposal to change the name of Firozabad district to Chandra Nagar is also doing the rounds.
The names of many cities and railway stations have been changed in Uttar Pradesh over the past few years with Allahabad-Prayagraj being the most notable of them.
Even earlier, many organisations had appealed to the UP government asking it to change Aligarh’s name.
This time around, the proposal was sent by members of the newly constituted district panchayat. In fact, the proposal was first presented to the panchayat by the Kshatriya Mahasabha and later endorsed by elected members Kehri Singh and Umesh Yadav.
The proposal was eventually passed by a unanimous vote by the district panchayat.
A final decision in this regard will be taken by the Uttar Pradesh government.
In Aligarh, the district panchayat is headed by Vijay Singh, who is related to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh Raju.
The Aligarh district panchayat has also sent a proposal to the UP government, asking it to name the upcoming mini-airport in Aligarh after Kalyan Singh.
Interestingly, this proposal comes barely six months ahead of the 2022 UP Assembly elections and is likely to turn into a talking point.
A number of BJP legislators and a state minister had met CM Yogi Adityanath earlier this month to demand a change in the names of districts, cities, and towns soon after the central government renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awards.
